01 About This ServiceAbout

① Definition

What Is House Steward?

House Steward is the highest tier of butler service THE BUTLER offers.

A team of three butlers stays resident 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in eight-hour shifts, overseeing everything from the running of the whole estate to the direction of household staff and the management of assets.

There is no butler service beyond this that can be offered to a private client. From ¥6,600,000 a month. To the most affluent of clients, we bring a true "commander of the house".

02 The steward, the highest rankReading 01

1. What is a House Steward?

A House Steward stood at the very top of all servants in a great British house, overseeing the whole of household management — the position of "general manager" of the house, under whose direction even the butler could be placed.

THE BUTLER's House Steward reproduces this concept as a modern estate-management service.

1.1 The ranks of the butler and the steward’s place

The British servant system had clear ranks, and beyond footman, under-butler and butler lay the seat of House Steward — a role demanding, besides beauty of deportment, the skill of a manager.

The reason the association places this service at the top of its line rests on this order of rank.

1.2 A 24/7 residence in a three-person rotation

In this service, a team of three butlers is resident at the estate in eight-hour shifts. Whether a sudden illness late at night or an unexpected caller at dawn, a butler can always respond.

The three function as a single team, rotating the roles of daytime running, night management, and record and handover.

1.3 The role of “commander of the house”

The essence of a House Steward lies not in labour but in the capacity to command.

Overseeing the direction of all staff who work at the estate — maids, chefs, gardeners, drivers — he creates a state in which the owner need speak only to the steward for the whole house to move.

2. How the estate is run

The resident team's work is not limited to daily hospitality. It runs the estate as a single organisation, from four angles: people, budget, assets and crises. To move the house not by instinct but by record and plan is the steward's way.

2.1 Directing and developing household staff

In an estate with existing staff, the steward organises the chain of command and sets standards of work and plans for training. Where new hires are needed, he oversees the whole from recruitment through interview to training.

As the staff's ability rises, the service standard of the whole estate is lifted.

2.2 Managing the annual budget and assets

He draws up the costs of running the estate as an annual plan and manages performance against it monthly. For assets such as artworks, antiques, the wine cellar and the building's systems, he plans regular maintenance to preserve their value.

2.3 Crisis management and regular reporting

He prepares emergency manuals anticipating natural disasters, sudden illness and equipment trouble, and conducts regular drills.

To the owner he reports on the running weekly and monthly, adding proposals for medium- and long-term improvement as standard. Entrust it all, yet see everything: this balance is the quality of an oversight service.

04 The introduction processReading 03

3. Introduction proceeds carefully, in stages

By its nature as a 24-hour residence, the introduction of a House Steward is never done overnight. So that it blends without strain into the life of the estate and the family, we set out a staged introduction plan over several months.

3.1 From a chairman interview and estate assessment

A consultation on introduction begins with a direct interview by the chairman, Butler Bell. Having asked about the scale of the estate, the existing staff structure and the standard you seek, he visits the site to assess the running challenges.

This assessment becomes the foundation of the introduction plan.

3.2 A three-to-six-month introduction plan

On the basis of the assessment, we draw up a three-to-six-month introduction plan, including the composition of the butler team, the preparation of living quarters and the handover from existing staff.

First, one butler begins residence and, while grasping the rhythm of life, we move to full strength in stages, with smoothness the highest priority.

3.3 On running costs and living space

Besides the monthly fee, we ask for the provision of living space for the butlers (servants' quarters within the estate or nearby lodging) and, separately, running costs such as food, uniforms and training.

We set out the detailed conditions, suited to the actual circumstances of the estate, at a private interview.

08 Frequently Asked QuestionsFAQ

⑧ FAQ

FAQ

We currently use another company's housekeeping service. Is a switch possible?+
Of course. We allow ample time for the transition, and the butler handles the handover from your current staff with care, proceeding by plan so that no gap in service arises.
Is a change of butler team possible?+
If there is an issue of compatibility, the team composition can be reviewed. As we place great value on building trust over the long term, however, we make it our basic approach to seek improvement through adjustment first.
