We trace the journey of Butler Bell (Yuichi Ishii), third-generation Chairman since 2023, leading globalization under the banner of choosing your butler.

The Reiwa Era (from 2023)

A New Chapter Begins in 2023

1. Taking Office in March 2023 — the Third President Sets Sail

In March 2023, the butler Bell — Yuichi Ishii, born May 12, 1981, and 41 at the time — became the third head, or "Tōdori," of the Japan Butler Association, the traditional title the association has used for its president since its first head, and the style under which he is credited as supervising editor of the association's book.

Bell first entered the world of butlering at 28 and rose to the role after years of refining his craft in the field.

He opens a new chapter for the association under a single vision: an age when you choose your butler. It was his years of hands-on experience, rather than any title, that earned him such broad support.

"Tōdori" is the association's traditional name for the butler who leads it, not a legal office.

On February 19, 2025 the body was incorporated as the All Japan Butler Association, a general incorporated association, and Yuichi Ishii serves as its Representative Director; legal documents therefore use that title.

"Third generation" counts the generations of the association itself — as a corporation he is its first Representative Director.

A New Chapter — An Age When You Choose Your Butler (2023 – )

1a. Opening a Long-Closed Door from the Inside

The third head's appointment was a quiet turning point. What the first two heads had protected was a particular way of working: a butler stays out of public view, and meets a client only through a trusted introduction.

That reserve was long the association's backbone — and it also meant that the people who needed a butler had no way of finding one themselves.

Bell published the roster of serving butlers in 2023, and in 2024 made the fee structure plain and opened a channel for enquiries that require no introduction. It was a decision to open a long-closed door from the inside.

In February 2025 the association put a legal structure around that work.

Opinion within the association divided over the decision. Those who had supported it for many years held that the old way was where a butler's calling truly lay, while those reading the changing times agreed with the third head.

The arguments were had in full, and some parted ways. Even so, the third head chose this path in order to carry the profession into its next century.

What both sides were trying to protect was the same thing. The pride of those who left is also part of what the association has inherited. It is with that respect that we take the first steps of a new butler association.

Two Dates: Founded 1890, Incorporated 2025

1b. Why the Association Gives Two Years

The association's profile carries two years, and they mean different things. 1890 (Meiji 23) is when the first head, Shingo Tanaka, founded the association.

February 19, 2025 is when that association was incorporated as a general incorporated association, with Yuichi Ishii as Representative Director and its training, certification and placement placed on a corporate footing.

More than 130 years of continuous work, and the legal vessel built to carry that work into its next century. Calling only one of them "established" would misrepresent both, so the two are always stated separately.

The Vision: An Age When You Choose Your Butler

2. The Vision — "An Age When You Choose Your Butler"

Bell's vision is plain. Butlers were once a luxury reserved for a privileged few; today, with spot bookings from as little as three hours, anyone can experience the service of a genuine butler.

That shift — from live-in or long-term contracts toward flexible, short-term use — opened the door to people who had never had any connection to butler service, and it widened the profession's reach considerably.

Bell has also cultivated corporate demand and strengthened transparency in how butlers are matched to their clients.

Carrying Japanese Butlering to the World

3. Internationalization and Global Expansion

After taking office, Bell began expanding the Japanese-style butler abroad in earnest, steadily building a record of placements in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and other cities centered on the affluent clientele of Asia.

Rather than simply increasing the number of English-capable butlers, he presents Japanese hospitality itself as a competitive strength.

The attentiveness of noticing and acting before being asked is valued across languages and cultures, and it has become the key to the distinct place Japanese butler culture holds in the global market.

Sharing Butler Culture Through Media and Education

4. Spreading Butler Culture Through the Media

Television, radio, magazines, web media — Bell appears actively across many channels to share the appeal of butler culture, bringing the figure of the butler closer to everyday life through drama coaching and variety programs.

He also founded the Japan Butler Academy, a specialized training institution whose curriculum blends English-style protocol with the Japanese spirit of hospitality.

Open to everyone from newcomers to seasoned professionals, it widens the base of the profession, and Bell has likewise worked to advance the role of women butlers.

Three Generations, One Inheritance

5. Carrying the Ideals Across Three Generations

The first president's philosophy that a butler is defined by heart, and the second president's method of union through dialogue — Bell's reforms do not reject these but reinterpret and develop them for a new age.

The core of the tradition is left unchanged while only its expression is brought up to date. That stance is why butler culture has continued unbroken for more than 130 years, and the future Bell envisions lies along the very same line.

About Butler Names

Since the founding of the Japan Butler Association, butlers have been addressed by a "butler name" rather than their given name, a practice meant to make them easier and more familiar for clients to call upon.

A butler name may be one's real name or a chosen one: some pick Western-sounding names such as "Sebastian" or "Madame Red," while others choose Japanese-style names such as "Nagi" or "Shiina" — a way of expressing individuality while bringing butler and client a little closer.
