Distant forerunners of household stewardship can be found in ancient Egypt around 3000 BC and in Rome's atriensis. The profession of "butler" itself, however, was born in the medieval age from the wine-keeping "bouteillier," expanded beyond the cellar from the late 16th century onward, reached its golden age in Victorian Britain, and after two world wars is being revived worldwide today.

The word "butler" derives from the Norman French "bouteillier" (keeper of the bottles). In the Victorian golden age the butler held high standing, addressed as "Mister" and set apart from other servants.

Three generations who kept the culture alive in Japan

Japan's butler history began in 1890 (Meiji 23), when first Head Butler Shingo Tanaka, who had encountered butler culture in Britain, founded the association.

In a great household, the steward — appointed only in the very largest houses — stood at the top of the domestic staff, overseeing personnel and accounts. The butler led the male servants, supervising the footmen and taking charge of the wine, the silver and service at table; in houses without a steward he also handled personnel and accounts as head of the staff. Female servants such as maids were overseen by the housekeeper, while the valet attended personally to the master. This three-branched hierarchy still underpins butler education today.
